An effective cover letter sent with application materials for a position:
- grabs the reader’s attention
- generates interest
- is tailored toward the specific position
A cover letter should include:
- an introductory paragraph that makes the reader want to learn more about you
- a description of your unique qualities and how you can add value to the organization
- a confident conclusion thanking the reader for their consideration
Tailoring your cover letter:
- Research the organization and position you are applying for referring to the company's website, job posting, and online resources
- Focus on key skills and qualifications needed for the position
- Briefly and concisely describe how your accomplishments, skills, and qualifications meet the needs of your potential employer
- Include industry 'buzz' words and key words from the job posting
