At the end of the interview, thank your interviewer(s) for the opportunity to interview and ask about next steps in the hiring process. Be sure to send a thank you letter via email or regular mail shortly after your interview. The letter typically consists of a brief paragraph reiterating your interest and stating how you are the best candidate for the job. If there was something brilliant that you wish you had stated during the interview, now is your chance.
A sample thank you letter for a teaching position follows:
Dear Ms. Walsh: I would like to thank you for the opportunity to interview for the third-grade teaching position at Smith Elementary School. With my successful development of a comprehensive reading curriculum using Ohio's academic content standards, integration of technology in my classroom, and skills working with at-risk and special education students, I could hit the ground running in this position. Additionally, my collaboration with other teachers on curriculum changes to facilitate my class’ smooth transition between grades and my role as a track coach demonstrate my commitment to strengthening my students’ educational experiences both inside and outside the classroom.
I thank you for your consideration and look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely, Mary Brown
If you do not hear from the employer within the timeframe for their hiring decision, you may wish to inquire about your status and offer any additional information. If the employer asks for references, be sure to give your references advance notice with a copy of your current resume and information on the job you’re seeking so that they can give valuable feedback to the inquiring employer.
